What is Phishing?

Source: Inspired eLearning

Phishing is a cyber-attack where malicious actors attempt to deceive individuals into disclosing sensitive information such as usernames, passwords, credit card numbers, or other personal data. These attacks involve impersonating a trusted entity, such as a bank, crypto exchange, email provider, or government agency, through fraudulent emails, text messages, or websites. It often has a sense of urgency, making users respond quickly.

Imagine receiving an email from Gate.io that there’s an issue with your account, and you should click the link attached to the mail, or else you will lose your funds. The link could contain downloadable malware-infected attachments, e.g., Keyloggers, or request sensitive information on fake login pages. Providing your personal information through these links puts your Gate account at risk of being hacked.

Note: Gate.io staff will NEVER ask for your passwords, SMS verification codes, or email verification codes, request you to download any app or make private transfers and withdrawals.

What is an Anti-Phishing Code?

An anti-phishing code is an extra layer of security offered by some websites and online services, particularly those dealing with finances like crypto exchanges. It helps users distinguish between genuine emails from the service and phishing attempts to steal user login information or other sensitive data.

Here’s how it works:

  • Create a unique anti-phishing code on the legitimate website following some simple steps (see example below).
  • From then on, all authentic emails from the service will include this unique code.
  • Always verify the presence of this code in any emails you receive to check if they are legitimate.

By being aware of the anti-phishing code, you’re less likely to fall for phishing scams where emails may appear genuine but lack the code.

Setting Up Anti-Phishing Code on Gate.io

To activate the Anti-Phishing code feature on your Gate.io account, follow these steps:

Step 1: At the homepage, go to My Account - Security Settings.

Importance of Anti-Phishing Code to Crypto Traders and Investors

Crypto traders and investors are high-value targets for scammers, as recovering stolen crypto assets can be impossible. Anti-phishing code can identify and flag suspicious links that may lead to phishing attempts. This can help crypto traders and investors avoid clicking on malicious links embedded in emails or messages.

Anti-phishing code also verifies the legitimacy of websites they interact with, ensuring they’re not entering credentials on a fake phishing site designed to steal their data.

Conclusion

By equipping yourself with the knowledge to identify phishing scams and utilizing Gate.io’s Anti-Phishing Code, you can significantly bolster your account’s security and safeguard your crypto assets. Remember, staying vigilant and implementing these security measures are crucial to protecting yourself from ever-evolving online threats.
