Frequent data breaches in the Web3 space, how to protect personal privacy and security?

A recent study analyzed 74 Web3-related security incidents and found that 23 of them resulted in a high risk of long-term data loss, with 10 data packets still available for purchase on dark web forums. This indicates that data breaches could leave affected users at long-term risk.

Security incidents can generally be divided into two categories: one is the exploitation of protocol vulnerabilities, where hackers obtain economic benefits through smart contract vulnerabilities; the other is network intrusion, where attackers compromise the organization's internal network and steal data or funds. In comparison, the risk of data leakage caused by network intrusion is more persistent.

Leaked data is often sold on the dark web or online forums. In recent years, multiple hacker forums such as Raid Forums and Breach Forums have been shut down, but new alternative forums continue to emerge. Some data is still publicly traded on dark web markets.

For users, once sensitive data such as personal identification information is leaked, they will face a long-term risk of fraud. Especially after the data breach incidents that occurred in 2019, the risk for affected users is even higher.

To reduce risks, it is recommended to take the following measures:

1. Reduce the number of centralized Web3 services used.
2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication
3. Diversify assets by storing them in self-custody wallets and hardware wallets.
4. Use different passwords
5. Regularly check for data breaches.
6. Use credit monitoring services

Although security vulnerabilities are difficult to completely avoid, the risk of personal data leakage can be effectively reduced through prudent use of services and strengthening self-protection. While enjoying the conveniences of Web3, it is also important to remain vigilant against potential security threats.
