Hangzhou has cracked a case of Crypto Assets ransomware targeting enterprises, with the amount involved exceeding 300,000 yuan.
On May 19, according to Xinhuanet, the Shangcheng District People's Court of Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province recently pronounced a special extortion case in the first instance, in which an engineer who was originally engaged in network security work used a Trojan virus to "hack" the enterprise network system and demanded cryptocurrency as a "ransom". At the end of 2023, the person in charge of the technical department of a medical institution in Hangzhou received calls from various departments one after another, reflecting that the system could not be logged in normally, and after verification, a total of 89 servers of the company could not operate, and the business was completely paralyzed. According to statistics, a total of three victim companies spent a total of more than 330,000 yuan to purchase cryptocurrencies from a third party and pay each other in order to resume normal operations. After the suspect arrived at the case, he admitted the crime of using the Trojan virus to carry out extortion. On September 11, 2024, the Shangcheng District People's Procuratorate prosecuted Qi Moumou and four others in accordance with the law for the crimes of extortion and infringement of citizens' personal information. In March 2025, the case was heard in the Shangcheng District People's Court. Recently, the four defendants were sentenced to fixed-term imprisonment ranging from three years to seven years and six months in the first trial, and were also fined. The judgment has now entered into force.
