CZ: Social Media Accounts Are The Weakest Security Link Of Cryptocurrency
On Monday, a cyber scam targeted the Ledger Discord server, and it was not an ordinary phishing link. The attacker used a compromised admin account to issue a fake security alert, warning users about a supposed vulnerability in Ledger's system. The message claimed that details regarding shipping, transaction history, and even the 24-word recovery phrase may have been compromised.
"The Discord admin account of Ledger has been hacked," CZ wrote on X. "The scammer falsely claimed about a security vulnerability and urged users to enter their recovery phrase on a phishing website." The fake post even links to a shady-looking website disguised as a "verification portal," promising to check if users have been affected and to provide compensation. Of course, the real goal is to steal their wallet recovery phrase. Then, Ledger confirmed that their internal system was still fine. In fact, a classic social engineering maneuver had occurred. The account of a contractor had been compromised, and the attacker used it to mimic the official voice of the Ledger team. The post seems legitimate. It has the common language of "your security is our top priority" and asks users to connect their wallet and verify their phrase. But the website link? Fake. Vulnerability? Does not exist. What CZ wants you to remember In his tweet, CZ shared two important lessons: Never enter the online recovery phrase. The social media accounts of cryptocurrency companies are often their weakest link. This second point is very important. No matter how safe the product is, just one mistake on social media can cause real damage. Discord, Telegram, X—hackers will come to where users gather. Why is this important? If you have been in cryptocurrency long enough, you have seen these scams before. But what makes this scam dangerous is that it looks very real. And when a warning comes from someone who looks like a manager or an official Discord operator, even smart users can fall into the trap. That is why CZ's warning is timely. Phishing attacks do not disappear. They just become smarter. This is not a hack of the Ledger system. This is a reminder: the human aspect of cryptocurrency is often the most vulnerable factor. And sometimes, the weakest link is not the technology but trust. Stay alert. Don't click in panic. And as CZ has made it clear: "Never provide your private key recovery phrase, no matter who requests it."
